Emergency refuge forms an integral part of an underground mine’s wider Emergency Response Plan (ERP). Fires, explosions, rock-falls, flooding and the release of smoke and other forms of toxic gas are the types of incidents that occur all too frequently, despite the high levels of planning and the safety precautions in place. In these types of emergencies, when evacuation is no-longer safe or practical, emergency refuge is designed to provide a safe and secure ‘go-to’ area for personnel to gather and await extraction.

    In consultation with the world’s leading mining companies and regional mining authorities, the MineARC MineSAFE has been continuously re-engineered and refined to create a safe-refuge solution that is fully integrated with today’s modern underground mining environment.
     
    Now in its fourth series, the MineSAFE Standard Design (SD) Refuge Chamber provides miners with optimum safety features, functionality and performance.
     
    Standard configurations are available based on occupancy – from 8 to 30 people – with each model engineered for maximum durability and manoeuvrability, both above and below ground. – More information

    Inside a MineSAFE Standard Design Refuge Chamber, a number of vital life-support systems combine to create a safe, ongoing environment for occupants. The chamber features a MineARC Series IV Controller; the most advanced safe-refuge technology anywhere in the world.

    Ultimately an SD refuge chamber’s dimensions and its rated occupancy can be custom-engineered to site specifications, without compromising on safety or performance.

    Special transport configurations include narrow builds specifically tailored for shaft mines, or modular builds, allowing a complete refuge chamber to be split into smaller sections before being transported and then reassembled underground.

    MineARC seating is ergonomically designed to provide suitable comfort during entrapment. Made from durable, hard wearing fabric, the seating provides 500mm of space per person.

    The MineSAFE Standard Design uses active chemicals and MineARC's patented Series IV scrubbing system to ‘scrub’ the build up of harmful CO2 and CO from the chamber.

    The MineARC Compressed Air Management System (CAMS) is a dedicated air management unit designed specifically for MineARC Refuge Chambers.

    Oxygen Supply #2: Medical Grade Oxygen Cylinders

    Minimum capacity based on G-size cylinder (8,580L). Medical grade oxygen cylinders to be provided by end user.

    Ample storage room located under seating and within Series IV Scrubber cabinet.

    Oxygen Supply #3: Oxygen Candle

    The military approved Oxygen candle provides 2,600L of breathable air during 60 minutes of ignition. Candle is an optional feature for most countries, and must be shipped separately.

    8watt fluorescent interior lighting is featured within the chamber.

    Operating Procedures

  • MineSAFE Modular Design

    The MineSAFE Modular Design range is engineered specifically to accommodate tight underground confines and mines with restricted access, while still providing sufficient internal space to comply with international best practice guidelines. The range is designed to be easily manoeuverable around sharp corners and within tight mine shafts; it’s modular construction means each section can fit within a cage and then be fully assembled underground.
     
    Standard configurations area available based on occupancy – from 12 to 32 people. Each section of the refuge chamber features forklift slots and lifting lugs for easy transportation on-site.

    Assembly of a Modular refuge chamber is a simple process that can take place on-site once all sections have been transported underground. Each section features a heavy duty flange arrangement, allowing the chamber to bolt together easily once a seal has been applied.   • MineSAFE Permanent Shelter

     
     
    A permanent refuge chamber (as opposed to portable) can often prove to be a more efficient and cost effective solution for an underground mine. In particular, mines that;
             
    • Have a large number of personnel underground at any one time,
    • Have low excavation costs, and
    • Where the regular movement of personnel underground remains within certain areas.
             
    Permanent refuge chambers therefore often double as break, rest and lunch areas, capable of sheltering upwards of hundreds of personnel at any one time. – More information

    STANDARD COMPONENTS

    Series IV Scrubber

    The MineARC Series IV Scrubber is the “Control Unit” of an expandable system that is capable of providing CO and CO2 scrubbing while also providing cooling/heating to large scale sealed environments.

    Air Conditioning

    All MineSAFE Permanent Shelters include quality reverse cycle split-system Mitsubishi Air Conditioners to both cool and dehumidify the refuge chamber.

    UPS Battery Backup

    The UPS is a fail safe system that can power the refuge chamber’s internal life support systems for a minimum of 36 hours should mains 'mine' power become cut-off.

    Compressed Oxygen Cylinder Racks

    If mine air supply fails, refuge chambers should be fitted with breathing grade O2 cylinders. Cylinders are to be provided by end user.

    Bulkhead Door

    Bulkhead doors are constructed from solid steel plate, with double-locking rotating handles, rubber seals, portal windows, and check valves to ensure a fully sealed environment.

    MineARC has developed a series of specially designed training chambers, designed to assist sites in the training and development of staff.
     
    The training chambers are available in three configurations – Standard Design with Series IV Scrubber, Standard Design with Series III Scrubber and Compact Design with ELVP Scrubber. They have been engineered to allow for convenient service, maintenance and operational training in an above-ground environment. – More information

    MineSAFE SD SIV Training Chamber

    MINESAFE SD-SIV TRAINING CHAMBER

     

    The MineSAFE SD-SIV Training Chamber is engineered based on the MineARC's Standard Design refuge model and features the flagship Series IV controller and scrubbing system; the most advanced safe-refuge technology in the world. The system features improvements on the older Series III model, including:

    • i.V.A.N (Intelligent Voice Audio Navigation); an on-board navigation assistant that guides occupants through operational procedures
    • MARCISORB pre-packaged chemical cartridges
    • Improved data logging capabilities

    The Series IV Scrubber is also a feature of the ChemSAFE Standard Design chamber.

    The SD-SIV chamber also features the new Compressed Air Management System (CAMS), MineARC's latest innovation in providing external, breathable air to the refuge chamber.

     

    MineSAFE CD ELVP Training Chamber

    The MineSAFE CD-ELVP Training Chamber is engineered based on MineARC's Compact Design refuge model and features an ELVP (extra-low-voltage-portable) control system.

    The extra low voltage scrubber is also a feature of the TunnelSAFE range.

    The CD-ELVP chamber also features the new Compressed Air Management System (CAMS), MineARC's latest innovation in providing external, breathable air to the refuge chamber.

     

    MineSAFE SD SIII Training Chamber

    MINESAFE SD-SIII TRAINING CHAMBER

    The MineSAFE SD-SIII Training Chamber is engineered based on the Series III refuge chamber model, which was on the market between the years of 2009 and 2013. The chamber features the Series III electrical control system and free-pour scrubber chemicals, which are no longer offered by MineARC Systems but are still supported and in use by many sites across the globe.

    The SD-SIII chamber also features the original MineARC three-stage mine air filter pack; a method of providing external breathable air to the refuge chamber prior to the introduction of CAMS.
