Emergency refuge forms an integral part of an underground mine’s wider Emergency Response Plan (ERP). Fires, explosions, rock-falls, flooding and the release of smoke and other forms of toxic gas are the types of incidents that occur all too frequently, despite the high levels of planning and the safety precautions in place. In these types of emergencies, when evacuation is no-longer safe or practical, emergency refuge is designed to provide a safe and secure ‘go-to’ area for personnel to gather and await extraction.

MineSAFE ND Series



Inside a MineSAFE Narrow Design Refuge Chamber, a number of vital life support systems combine to create a safe, ongoing environment for occupants. Systems include primary and secondary oxygen supplies, air conditioning systems, positive pressure systems, electrical systems, gas detection and CO/CO2 absorption systems (referred to as ‘scrubbing’ systems).

Ultimately an ND refuge chamber’s dimensions and its rated occupancy can be custom-engineered to site specifications, without compromising on safety or performance.

Lifting Lugs

Strobe Lighting

Extra low voltage green and red LED lighting to allow for easy identification of the refuge chamber in an emergency.

Porthole Window

12mm porthole viewing window, compliant with Australian Standard 2208. Blast shield protection available upon request.

Sealing Door

Outward opening door, featuring double locking rotating handles. The vacuum tested seal maintains a positive internal pressure.

Skid Base

The skid base provides ease of mavoeuvrability, featuring 250 x 100mm forklift slots, front and rear mounted tow points and front mounted 25mm steel plate push blocks.

Reflective Signage

Safety and operational signage in reflective stickering for high visibility underground. Translation into a second language available.


High durability white paint for underground visibility. Sand blasted to 2.5 grit, and in compliance with AS/NZS 2312:2002.

Fire Extinguisher

Fire extinguisher for external use only. Optional for non-Australian orders (supplied separately as Dangerous Goods). Fire blanket with BSI certification (AS/NZ S 3504) located inside chamber.




Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is vital to combat the potentially fatal effects of heat stress, caused by the occupant’s metabolic activity, as well as any ambient heat .

Operating Procedures

Operating procedures are located on the wall of the refuge chamber, as well as within hardcopy manuals. Operating procedures can be translated into a second language.

MineARC’s MARCISORB CO2 and MARCISORB CO cartridges provide superior scrubbing capacity, are easy to load, safe to handle, and can store for long periods.


Non slip, removable flooring is featured throughout the refuge chamber.

ELV Scrubber System

The MineSAFE Narrow Design uses active chemicals and MineARC's extra-low-voltage scrubbing system to ‘scrub’ the build up of harmful CO2 and CO from the chamber.


MineARC seating is ergonomically designed to provide suitable comfort during entrapment. Made from durable, hard wearing fabric, the seating provides 500mm of space per person.

The MineARC Compressed Air Management System (CAMS) is a dedicated air management unit designed specifically for MineARC Refuge Chambers.

ELV Controller Interface

The digital controller interface is the operational hub of the refuge chamber. From here, all power, lighting & scrubbing systems can be managed with the push of a button.

Aura-FX Digital Gas Monitor

• Real-time gas monitoring with live analysis and voice prompting

    Now in its fourth series, the MineSAFE Standard Design (SD) Refuge Chamber provides miners with optimum safety features, functionality and performance.

  • MineSAFE Essential Design

    The MineSAFE Essential Design (ED) provides the most cost effective alternative to MineARC’s flagship Standard Design refuge chamber. The ED chamber offers all of the critical features required to sustain life during an emergency whilst maintaining the quality of a MineARC engineered
    refuge chamber.
    The Essential Design is designed specifically to accommodate tight mining confines such as shaft mines, while still providing ample internal space for a range of occupancies – from 8 to 26 people.   • MineSAFE Compact Design

    The MineSAFE Compact Design (CD) is designed specifically for tight mining confines, such as single-entry development headings. This small, compact, ultra-portable refuge chamber is easy to manoeuvre and position around site.
    The Compact Design is designed for optimum autonomy. The chamber’s ‘extra-low-voltage’ control system means it can sit stand-alone for extended periods without requiring connection to mains (mine) power (around 6 weeks). – More information

  • MineSAFE Modular Design

    The MineSAFE Modular Design range is engineered specifically to accommodate tight underground confines and mines with restricted access, while still providing sufficient internal space to comply with international best practice guidelines. The range is designed to be easily manoeuverable around sharp corners and within tight mine shafts; it’s modular construction means each section can fit within a cage and then be fully assembled underground.
    Standard configurations area available based on occupancy – from 12 to 32 people. Each section of the refuge chamber features forklift slots and lifting lugs for easy transportation on-site.

  • MineSAFE Permanent Shelter

    A permanent refuge chamber (as opposed to portable) can often prove to be a more efficient and cost effective solution for an underground mine. In particular, mines that;
    • Have a large number of personnel underground at any one time,
    • Have low excavation costs, and
    • Where the regular movement of personnel underground remains within certain areas.
    Permanent refuge chambers therefore often double as break, rest and lunch areas, capable of sheltering upwards of hundreds of personnel at any one time. – More information

  • MineSAFE Training Chambers

    MineARC has developed a series of specially designed training chambers, designed to assist sites in the training and development of staff.
    The training chambers are available in three configurations – Standard Design with Series IV Scrubber, Standard Design with Series III Scrubber and Compact Design with ELVP Scrubber.
