‘AN INDUSTRY OF THE FUTURE’: MINEARC ATTENDS MINEXPO 2016
The MineARC Systems Team is only just getting back to business as usual after the whirlwind that was MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2016. Held at the Las Vegas Convention Centre from 26th – 28th September, the show featured 1900 exhibitors across 12 halls, covering 840,000sq.ft of space.
This record turn-out was a positive indication of the state and future of the mining industry; a topic that was the major focus during the Opening Conference Session of MINExpo. A panel consisting of Gary Goldberg (Newmont Mining Corp. President & CEO), Ted Doheny (Joy Global Inc. President & CEO), Kevin S. Crutchfield (Contura Energy Inc. CEO), Harry “Red” Conger (Freeport-McMoRan Inc. President & COO), and Phillips S. Baker Jr (Hecla Mining Co. President & CEO) discussed what is in store for mining.
When asked how equipment today is making mining safer, the panel commented on how technological advancements in the industry are keeping people out of harm’s way. They states that suppliers are increasingly helping mines to minimise injuries and improve productivity and efficiency through the development of better automation and clever technologies.
“We’ve seen a significant improvement and reduction in the number of injuries,” Goldberg said. “We’re still not quite to zero harm. I think that’s always our goal in this journey, but we’ve made good inroads.”
The panel agreed that advances in technology are rapidly changing the workforce as we know it. “I think we’ve got to move away from being thought of as an industry of the past,” Crutchfield said. “We are an industry of the future.”
The theme of technology was certainly evident throughout MINExpo, with many exciting product developments on display. MineARC Systems was no exception, launching our new System Intelligence package; the latest advancement in safe refuge technology. Designed to provide real-time monitoring, communication and system diagnostics, the System Intelligence product suite provides significant cost saving advantages to sites, whilst taking standards in industrial safety to the next level.
